There are between 30 and 50 live births each year. Three midwives share the workload between them and provide midwifery care throughout the pregnancy and birth.
Our medical officers are required to have training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and are responsible for providing ante-post - and intra-partum care. The surgeons are trained to undertake emergency caesarean sections if needed. In addition, we have the facility to bring a consultant gynaecologist to the islands to perform planned caesareans.
When the consultant gynaecologist does visit, they review the cases of all pregnant women, in order to review and advise on our maternity care.
We are not able to offer an epidural service.
The Falkland Islands Government is committed to continually improving the quality of our services to residents and visitors. We value your feedback and enquiries.
