About Us

There has been a library in Stanley since the 19th Century, thought first to have been run by the church making books accessible for children.

In the early 1900’s the library service was taken over by the Falkland Islands Government and was located on the sea front, in the centre of Stanley in the newly built Town Hall. It was in this location until 1944 when an unfortunate fire ravished not only the library, but the courts and museum that shared the building. The Town Hall was rebuilt in 1950 and with the help of donated books from the community, and funding from the Government, the library was once again opened and situated in the Town Hall.

The Library survived the 1982 conflict, despite the Town Hall being taken over by the invading forces and the building consequently becoming a target building.

In 1992 a new secondary school and leisure facility was built. This was in response to the Islands increased prosperity and population in the years following the 1982 conflict. It was felt that the library would be better placed in this building, to serve as a school library as well as a Public Library, and so the Library was moved to its new home.

In December 2019 the library was closed, again in response to a population growth. The secondary school had out grown itself and needed more space for classrooms. In January 2020, it was moved to its current location, a purpose built library attached to Falkland College.

Since opening in May 2020 the library has welcomed more than 3,500 visitors, has three weekly visits from the secondary school. It is regularly used by nurseries, The Hub and the Shield Project. We have run various activities including Holiday Reading Challenges, Story Time Yoga and Help Decorate the Library for Halloween as well as having a visit from the South Georgia Biosecurity dog! We’ve established a brand new digital library (see e-library tab), making our library open and accessible to all members of the community, no matter where in the Falklands they are, or how they prefer to consume media.

It has been a busy time, but there is a lot more planned! Keep an eye on the Activities and Events section to keep updated.
