The Falkland Islands has been assigned €5.9m from the 11th round of the European Development Fund (EDF). The EDF is a programme funded by EU Member States specifically to support economic and social development programmes in Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs).

The funds allocated under the 11th EDF will enable FIG to focus on equal access to infrastructure and by enhancing internal connectivity and accessibility in order to ensure equal development opportunities for urban and rural areas within the Falkland Islands.

Key aspects of the planned EDF 11 investment include improved domestic air services and improved road infrastructure.

The Falkland Islands have previously benefited from EDF funds. In the10th EDF the Falkland Islands secured €3.5m and aided in implementing a Tourism Strategy and Rural Development Strategy in 2013. In July 2018, an EDF Evaluator visited to the Islands to undertake an overall independent assessment of the past performance of the EU support to the Falkland Islands under the 9th and 10th EDF, paying particular attention to its results measured against its objectives.
